Major General Maurie McNarn AO, Director, Defence Intelligence Organisation, was the Cadet Unit’s distinguished guest at the Year 12 Cadet Valedictory Dinner recently held at the school.
Having been the Australian National Commander of the Middle East Area of Operations for deployments in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Gulf, General McNarn illustrated his address concerning leadership with a number of contemporary stories of experiences from his active service offshore. General McNarn reminded us of the need for leaders to be compassionate, loyal and courageous.
General McNarn had the full attention of his audience and his address was summed up by many cadets, parents and staff as nothing other than ‘awesome’. General McNarn’s visit to Scotch complemented the aim of the evening (to thank, advise and farewell the unit’s leaders). The values of integrity and compassion, so clearly emphasised in his address, were appropriate, clear messages for the departing leaders of the Cadet Unit. Our hope is that Australia’s leaders of tomorrow make a difference and help maintain the greatness and safety of our nation.
