Scouts gain outdoor experience

In Term 1, Ist Hawthorn Scout Troop visited the Powelltown/Warburton district for a three-day hike, with the Patrol Leader navigating each stage of the journey and organising the arrangements for lightweight cooking and camping in two-man tents.

Planned by Scout Leader Mr Daniel Casey and Assistant Scout Leader Mr Tim Byrnes, the hike was supported by members of the Venturer Unit, two members of the Rover Crew (Mat Lee and Mat Moore) and the Group Leader Mr Chris Taylor. Despite some overnight rain, the days were very pleasant for walking and the scenery was magnificent. The boys really enjoyed themselves and gained a great deal of outdoor experience.

Several presentations were made at the final scout meeting of Term 1. Mrs Claire Quail was leaving to have her first baby, and the Troop presented her with a large fluffy soft toy lamb, in appreciation of her two-year involvement with Ist Hawthorn.

Ms Narelle Tivendale, who joined the Troop this year, was married during the Easter vacation, and the Troop presented her and her fiancee with a gift to mark the occasion.

Scout Leader Mr Daniel Casey presented a Scouts Australia Service Certificate to Group Leader Mr Chris Taylor, to mark the completion of his five years as a leader. Chris has been a member of the Scout Association for 30 years.

On Thursday 13 May, the Troop visited the Victorian Parliament in Spring Street, and met the Leader of the Opposition (and former Scotch master), Mr Robert Doyle. The Scout Leader, Mr Daniel Casey said Mr Doyle was very impressed with the intelligent questions the lads asked during the visit.
