The 5th NT/Tiwi Islands Football Tour was held in late March this year with a group of Year 10 and 11 students playing games against the NT City and Country U/16 squads and Xavier School on Bathurst Island.
The visit to Bathurst Island was, as always, the highlight of the tour, with our hosts feeding us with their staple diet of turtle and water buffalo and taking us on a walking tour of the community's historic features (including a wooden church that has withstood numerous cyclones). The game on Bathurst Island was played in cyclonic weather with torrential rain blowing in and out.
The boys played some excellent football and were the first team to win all the games on tour - with an historic victory on Bathurst Island and a come from behind win in their final match against the very talented NT City.
Much was gained with an insight into very different Indigenous culture and some high quality football played in adverse conditions.
