NARRATIVE SUMMARY OF PROGRESS

Kapumfi school project is located in Kopa ADP catchment area. Kopa ADP is located 70 kms from Mpika District in the Northern Province of Zambia. Mpika is approximately 640 km from Lusaka the capital city of Zambia. It lies along the Great North road that links Zambia with Tanzania and the rest of East Africa through Nakonde /Tunduma boarder.

Kapumfi school project is currently in its third phase that involves the construction of the science laboratory and the library. The super structure is at slab level with walls on the sides raised to window level. The community played an active role in the preparation of the upfront locally construction materials that included the bricks and sand. The Parent Teacher’s Association (PTA) committee ensured the management of the resources and the Ministry of Education facilitated the provision of technical support through the buildings officer guided the community in the construction works.

In the fulfillment of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between World Vision Zambia and Ministry of Education through the office of the District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) in Mpika, the number of trained teachers at Kapumfi has increased from four to seven. The provision of the teachers is as a result of the increased number of classrooms. Through this facilitation 512 children (261 boys and 251girls) are able to access basic education in an improved learning environment.

The current infrastructure under construction is an addition to the 1x3 classroom block (CRB) constructed in the first phase, 1x2 CRB rehabilitated under the sponsorship budget, 1 staff house and five Ventilated Pit latrines Toilets VIP toilets done in the second phase. The environment at Kapumfi is changing and overwhelming. The school is being regarded to have the best infrastructure in Kopa chiefdom. The community has been greatly motivated by the help being rendered to the school by Scotch College especially after witnessing the improvement in infrastructure and also the number of teachers who are now willing to work at Kapumfi School. They realized that to keep these teachers around, there was need to increase the number of staff houses from the current two so as to cater for the three new teachers. In light of this, the community also mobilized itself to construct another staff house to accommodate the newly posted trained female teachers.

The borehole was recently drilled at Kapumfi and installation of the pump and tanks is being done. The science laboratory will be serviced with water by gravity from the tanks. The water will also contribute further in improving the environment. The school orchard will receive water from the tanks by gravity more especially in October when the water table goes done. The orchards are servicing for both learning and nutrition purposes. The community is grateful as all the developments happening at Kapumfi are as the results of the efforts being shown by the Scotch College students with their financial support. The community at Kapumfi feels the relationship between them and Scotch College continues to growing.

Project phases

The community played an active role in the construction of the school super structures (1x3 classroom block in the first phase and one staff house and 6 ventilated improved pit latrines (VIP) in the second phase. The community did prepare locally available resources that included bricks and sand towards construction works. Besides, the ADP facilitated the rehabilitation of the staff house and the 1x2 classroom block to attract more teachers to the school.

During the course of implementation phases the ADP facilitated the drilling of the borehole AT Kapumfi School under the water project. The borehole was recently drilled at Kapumfi and installation of the pump and tanks is underway. The newly established water source will facilitate operations of the science laboratory and the school orchard. Water will flow by gravity from the tanks. The national shortfall of cement affected the initial implementation of the project. However, the project is on track and is expected to be completed by 30th November 2008

HUMAN INTEREST STORY

Changing the face

(Story by Mulengo Mathews)

Kapumfi community was one of the most neglected communities in the area of education support. Kapumfi area is now changing the face from the time the Scotch College established the relationship with the Kapumfi community in 2005. Though a1x3 classroom block was constructed, the old 1x2 CRB remained an embarrassment to the community for it was in dilapidated state.

The community is thankful to World Vision Kopa ADP for initiative taken to facilitate rehabilitation work at Kapumfi 1x2 CRB. This achievement is as a result of efforts that the ADP in partnership with Kopa community is making to improve the learning environment for children through infrastructure development and supply of school requisites.

Changing the face

before after

Before rehabilitation and After rehabilitation

Kapumfi community members participated in the rehabilitation works through ferrying of sand and water to the construction site. Also molding and burning of bricks was done by this community in efforts to have better learning environment for their children.

Initially the super structure was facing on the western part before rehabilitation. The face was changed to make it correspond to the other 1x3 classroom block constructed under Scotch College support. This provision of the school infrastructure facility has also changed the education face for Kapumfi community.

The newly rehabilitated classroom block has added value to the learning environment for the children at Kapumfi.
