TIC Mr Jan Honnens

Martinique Pro Dive School of fish Nemo
Martinique Whitsunday ProDive Whitsundays School of fish Nemo and Marlin

The activity's main aim is to get Years 10-12 Outdoor Activities students certified as an internationally recognised PADI Open Water scuba diver. To attain this certification, the students will have to participate in and successfully complete training and assessment in three components:

  1. Scuba Diving Theory (Safety precautions, the physics of diving, communication under water etc.)
  2. Scuba Diving in confined water (Practising entry, descent, buoyancy control, mask clearing, ascent etc. in the Scotch College pool)
  3. Scuba Diving in open water (Practising entry, descent, buoyancy control, mask clearing, ascent etc. on the Great Barrier Reef)

The first two components will be completed at Scotch College on Thursday afternoons during Term 3 with the assistance of Mr Jan Honnens and Mr Tom Woodruff. The third component will be completed on a 3 day/2 night live-aboard trip to the Great Barrier Reef with the highly recognised dive operator ProDive Whitsundays, whose diving instructors, with the assistance of Mr Jan Honnens and Mr Tom Woodruff, will do their utmost to ensure that the boys have a successful, enjoyable and safe experience in the open water environment.

Students who already have an Open Water certification or an Advanced Open Water certification can participate in this activity and complete the required training and assessments to obtain the next level of certification, i.e. the Advanced Open Water certification or the Rescue Diver certification respectively.

Prerequisites

Before commencing the activity it is important to:

  • Complete a PADI liability release and assumption of risk agreement form.
  • Complete a PADI standard safe diving practices and statement of understanding form.
  • Complete a PADI medical statement form.
  • See a diving medical qualified doctor to have a diving medical (AS 4005.1) done. The cost is about $80.
