Welcome to the 2008 season. We wish the boys and coaching team an enjoyable and competitive season. There has been strong growth in the participation of soccer at Scotch in recent years. We now have some 365 players participating in 2008, making soccer one of the largest sports at Scotch.
PASS (Parent Auxiliary of Scotch Soccer) provides for communication and support between parents and the teachers & coaches involved in Soccer at Scotch. PASS also raises money to support soccer activities and encourages parents to become active in supporting their son’s winter sport.
PASS hosts a number of events during the season aimed to encourage interaction between parents, boys and coaches. The first main event of the season is the Soccer Breakfast, which is a great opportunity to introduce the new season. A Sausage Sizzle is held during a 1st XI game, usually on a day when most of the other Scotch soccer teams are playing at home. We encourage all soccer players and parents to come and watch the 1sts play during the sausage sizzle. The Parents’ Party is held on a Friday evening at a member’s home and is a great informal gathering where new parents meet others and old friends catch up.
PASS aims to raise funds for activities to support the boys. In the past, fundraising has enabled purchasing of soccer banners and trophies for the players. We are currently selling high quality Scotch College Picnic Chairs, which are perfect for watching your boys play soccer. We have limited stock – so get your orders in now.

PASS hosted a Mothers Day morning tea at McKendrick Oval, which was a great success. Congratulations to Tom Kent who won the first prize in the raffle – tickets to the Melbourne Victory vs Juventus match. Many thanks to the parents who catered, with some beautiful tea cakes and sponges on offer. Both coaches and players appreciated the strong support on the day. Thanks also to Melbourne Grammar who hosted a similar morning tea for the 7As and the 8As who played at their home ground on the day.
The Soccer Breakfast is held at the beginning of each season before school on a Friday. It is an opportunity to bring boys, coaches, and parents together. Speakers are invited to stimulate and engage the boys’ interest in the sport.
Last year’s soccer breakfast was a great success and this years was even better!
This year our guest speaker was Jack Reilly, a former Socceroo goalkeeper who represented Australia 35 times between 1970 and 1977 including the 1974 World Cup in West Germany. Mr Reilly is also a Director of Football Federation Australia and was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2004. His insights provided Scotch students and their parents with a unique opportunity to hear and discuss football and its future at Scotch and within Australia.
We were also excited to have Archie Thompson and Grant Brebner, Melbourne Victory players attend the breakfast.

This year, we have introduced a weekly match report that will include a brief summary by the team coaches of each of the weekend’s games (from year 7 to the seniors). It is published each Wednesday throughout the season.
This year has seen the introduction of a new tradition between Melbourne Grammar and Scotch College. From this year onwards, when the two soccer teams meet during the APS season, they will be playing for the Rose and Thistle Cup. The Rose and Thistle Cup (Rose - of England, MGS and Thistle - of Scotland, Scotch) represents the character of both schools and it's intention is to further develop the bond between the two schools and to increase the profile of the sport in line with its increasing popularity within both communities.
It was an extremely cold, bleak Saturday morning with incessant rain that provided the backdrop for the 1st XI soccer game against Melbourne Grammar at Flack Park on Saturday 17 May for the inaugural cup match. Unfortunately for Scotch the score-line of 2 - 3 in Melbourne Grammar's favour turned out to be as bleak as the weather. In contrast to the freezing conditions on the pitch, a sizeable number of teachers, coaches, boys and parents were welcomed into the warm pavillion for a light lunch. Mike Trotter (MGS Soccer Club Chairman) welcomed the group and congratulated the boys on their game. The inaugural Rose and Thistle Cup was then presented to the captain of the winning MGS team, Tom Banfield by Paul Sheehan (MGS Headmaster). Acting Principal of Scotch College, Ian Savage presented each player with commemorative photos of the two teams. The two Captains also spoke about the game.
Thanks go to the Melbourne Grammar Soccer Club for their warm hospitality and for the commemorative photos produced on the day and presented to all boys on both teams.

The year level representatives are your first point of contact within the club. Please introduce yourselves to them – we welcome any suggestions you may have as parents, to improve communication, social interaction and support for our boys playing soccer.
Year level representatives are responsible for communicating social and fundraising activities within the year level, and for assisting in organising events. If you wish to volunteer as a year level representative, please contact the President. We are happy to have more than one representative per year level.

Parents who are interested in helping for particular events, but are not interested in the broader committee role, can volunteer as "Activity Helpers". This can be of tremendous help to the committee as well as being a satisfying experience for parents without the full commitment of committee involvement."
