Scotch debaters take on the world
WORDS – MS MICHELE LINOSSIER – ACADEMIC EXTENSION COORDINATOR
A team of Scotch Year 11 boys travelled to Singapore in November to debate at the inaugural Prometheus Cup. The boys, Charlie Austin, James Nguyen, Dinesh Giritharan, Ronald Zhang and Ryan Sheridan, competed extremely well, finishing third, and were excellent ambassadors for their school and for their country. In addition, Charlie Austin (ninth), Ronald Zhang (13th) and Ryan Sheridan (19th) were placed in the top 20 speakers of the tournament.
Expertly coached by Chris Bisset, the Scotch team participated in 10 debates – four prepared and six impromptu – using the ‘World Schools’ debating style, with points of information and reply speeches which are quite different and more challenging than our usual Debaters Association of Victoria style.
The Scotch team worked hard to master the material, and made it through the quarter-finals to the semi-final, but lost the semi-final in a 3/2 adjudicator split.
This was a fantastic achievement, given the high quality of the teams, which came from all over the world, including Thailand, the UK, South Africa, the USA, the Philippines, Hong Kong, India and Singapore.
The boys had a wonderful international experience, enjoying the competition, the cultural experiences, the amazing Singaporean hospitality and the new friendships they formed.
