A superb autumn morning, a hearty breakfast and an inspiring address from acclaimed swimming coach Ian Pope all combined to make the 2012 Scotch Family Easter Breakfast, held this year on 30 March, a resounding success. This year’s program also included a screening of Scotch staff member Sylvia Michaels’ spiritual journey in Ethiopia.

Now in its 17th year, the breakfast brings members of the Scotch Family together to affirm the Christian foundation of the school as well as reflect on the meaning of Easter. Ian Pope joined a list of public figures from diverse backgrounds, such as Tim Costello, Professor Graham Clarke and Professor Ian Harper, who have shared their experiences and Christian testimonies with the Scotch Family.

Using the careers of Scotch’s two recent Olympians, Matt Welsh (’94) and Matt Targett (’03) as examples, Ian Pope explored the world of elite swimming as well as providing insights into his own Christian journey. In the words of organising committee member Rob Kerr, Ian’s talk had ‘something for everybody’.

‘What really challenged me about Ian’s talk was his emphasis on setting our goals and pursuing them with dedication and commitment, if we are to achieve our best,’ Rob said. ‘Drawing on a sporting analogy, he made a distinction between being a spectator and a participant, which was particularly relevant in the context of Easter,’ Rob added.
