MR JAMIESON KANE – HEAD OF MEDIA

Congratulations to two Scotch VCE Media students from the Class of 2011, Ashley Vines and Albert Salt, whose short films have been included in the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority’s Top Screen 2012 exhibition. Each year, Top Screen presents only a dozen of the very best screen-based works created by VCE students from around Victoria.

It was very pleasing to see Ashley Vines’ documentary, Looking for Uncle Danny and Albert Salt’s music video, This is Her included in the 2012 exhibition. This is the seventh consecutive year that works by Scotch Media students have been selected for inclusion in Top Screen, as exemplars for media students statewide.

Describing his film as a ‘heartfelt documentary’ Ash Vines said the film ‘captured my personal journey to locate my estranged uncle’. Albert Salt said his work, ‘a stylised music video to an original piece of music,’ was inspired by Jack Conte’s video song concept, ‘what you see is what you hear’.

Scotch students undertaking VCE Media this year in Year 11 and Year 12 visited the exhibition at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) during Term 1. Seeing media products made by fellow Scotch students certainly challenged and motivated them to produce works that might be worthy of screening at Top Screen next year.
