O S Footy has a successful 1998 season

Overall, season 1998 was an exciting year, with all teams competing in the finals; the first time this has been achieved.

The Seniors won 10 lost 8, finished 4th. Again, bad injuries to many players throughout the year disrupted the side on many occasions. Having stated this, there were a few games that the side should have won and therefore finish higher on the ladder. Nevertheless, with 4 games to go, it seemed unlikely that Scotch would appear in the finals. However great victories over De La Salle, Collegians and especially St Kevin's, allowed the club to enter the finals race once again.

After demolishing OMs in the first semi we played St Bernard's for the right to play OXs in the Grand Final. A win by 15 pts over St Bernards and the flag was up for grabs! A never-say-die Old Scotch combination finally succumbed to the power of the Xaverian side.

The Reserves won 13 lost 5, and finished second. A very competitive side throughout the year, but just like the Seniors, had to be adjusted weekly with injury. Lost to OXs second semi, defeated Collegians by 7 points in the preliminary final, after being behind for most of the day. They took on an extremely talented Xaverian side in the Grand Final, and as with the Seniors, were proud runners up.

The U19s won 15 lost 3, finished second. A highly competitive and classy side for most of the year. Defeated Whitefriars by 52 points in the second semi and went into the Grand Final again against Whitefriars, in a confident mood.

With just rewards for a magnificent season, the lads overwhelmed Whitefriars in every quarter and in every department of the game, to run out winners by a massive 82 points.

A super effort by all participants throughout the year.

The 3rd XVIII won 11 lost 4, finished third.

In an up and down season they were competitive for most games. Won their first semi final against O Brighton by 6 points. Courageous in defeat to De La Salle by 3 goals in the Preliminary Final.

Awards: Seniors Best & Fairest Rohan Price; runner up Matt Angus; Best in Finals Tom Wilson. Reserves: Best & Fairest Stuart Gibbs; runner up Nick Hooper. Best in Finals: Nick Hooper, David Thomas, Nick Thompson. U19: Best & Fairest Hugh Thomas; runner up Tim Paterson; Best in Finals Hugh Thomas.

3rd XVIII Best & Fairest Nick Tribe; runner up James Deakin; Best in Finals Nick Tribe, Stuart Sheahan.

To my Committee, the coaches, physios, and all supporters, my sincere thanks for making '98 a great season, enjoyed by all. We look forward to '99 in eager anticipation.

Vale Ian McKinley Wilson

On Thursday 22 the OSCFC lost one of its greatest supporters in Ian McKinley Wilson (Willo) father of Tom. Our great ruckman for many seasons. Ian was Secretary of the Club 1988/89; Club Captain 1963/66; Coach Reserves 1990. He was always around the Club and available to do any job required. His presence will be sorely missed by the club.

To his family, our deepest sympathies from all associated with the club.

'Willo - We salute you'
