A Cardinal farewell to Don

Don and Marg Werner head west

Family and friends in the Cardinal Pavilion, by the river, provided the ideal setting to farewell Don and Marg Werner.

Christmas in Melbourne followed by a three day trip across the Nullabour to Perth will be almost a homecoming after 18 years, the beginning of a dream to live in Perth once again.

The November evening also provided the opportunity for many old friends to 'catch up', the sound level rising as the night progressed, with happy times on the river being relived by many.

David Douglas on behalf of Cardinal members, Michael Sim, OSCA. And Greg Baker, Chairman of Rowing at Scotch all paid tribute to Don, and to the years of tireless work he had given Scotch, and rowing in particular.

Coaching, mentoring young rowers, fund raising, particularly for the Cardinal Pavilion, Murray Marathons, the Alan Mitchell Club, Sunday morning rows at Scotch......the list was long.

Don responded to the speakers, thanking them for the presentation Scotch oar, print of 'The Winning Tradition' and photo of the 1998 1st crew. Recollections of the past, both humorous and triumphant were related. Packing up the Werner household also revealed the forgotten Cardinal megaphone stored for at least 10 years under the stairs, now in the hands of President Ian Addison.

Don concluded by reflecting, 'I feel that I am being written out of the play, however I know there is always a river somewhere.'
