Creative thinking with Edward de Bono

On Tuesday 13th October, a small group of boys had the unique opportunity of attending a workshop presented by Edward de Bono, who is the creator of the Six Hat Thinking concept, and is regarded as the world's leading authority on creative and conceptual thinking.

He presented his Six Hat Thinking concept, along with the CORT thinking strategy. Scotch boys were able to workshop these lateral thinking concepts in very creative ways. Below are some of the comments boys made after the presentation.

'His method has helped people of all different ages learn about ways of thinking.'

Devin Toh 5W

'Today I learnt not to go straight to the problem, but use the six hats.'

Delightful, Excellent, Brainstorming, Optimistic, Nice, Options'

Chris Colman 5E

'De Bono's lateral thinking strategies have saved many companies. One company had been thinking for 3 weeks, costing them $10,000 a day. When Dr de Bono's thinking was introduced they found a solution in 12 minutes and saved $10,000,000!'

Nicholas Cheng 5W

'Mr de Bono's workshop was very interesting and I learnt a lot of ideas that will help me in classwork and homework.' Peter Rattray 5E

'I thought Mr de Bono was a very good presenter in the way he could relate things to what we know about. He taught us about his thinking strategies. I will use these strategies among my friends when we have to make decisions.' Andrew Fairservice 4L

Shade sails for playgrounds

During the recent vacation, both adventure playgrounds received sun protection by the installation of shade sails. Both sets of sails blend discretely into the surrounding environment and are a welcome addition to the sun smart policy which operates.

The sails erected in the Junior Primary playground have been generously donated by the JSPA, who have dedicated their donation in recognition of service to the school by recently retired, Mrs Liz Pratt.

Media and communication

The term 4 general studies programme commenced recently for Year 5 students. The current topic of study is Media, Television and Communication.

As part of this unit of study, the students and staff were fortunate to utilise the assistance provided by 'Media Minds', a group which provides educational workshop programmes on television and media for primary aged students.

The 'Media Minds' presenters were able to teach the students the key aspects of television production and video preparation, whilst calling on the students' talents of enthusiasm and creativity.

The students were assigned jobs, to culminate in the production of a school video. The task of producing the video, using current television techniques, proved to be challenging. In the first instance, boys worked as a team of reporters, researching information on an area of interest, in relation to the Junior School.

Scripts were prepared by the group and rehearsed by the member of the group, who was chosen to be the presenter.

On the day of filming boys were taught key concepts about television production.

The day was both informative and enjoyable, and provided valuable 'hands on' understanding television and video production.
