Charles Lin Mural

Charles Lin Mural

Charles Lin, a Year 11 Art student, has been working through recent weeks to paint a very large-scale mural located at the north end of the Art Department in the stairwell. The mural is figurative and covers two walls and is approximately three metres high by eight metres long.

The work is being completed using acrylic paints mixed with extender to provide transparency, and glazes for low sheen gloss. Charles has applied the paint in an expressive manner, reflecting some of the artists who have influenced his style.

The faces are abstracted and employ the linear qualities of Mike Parr, and the distortion of Francis Bacon.

His background surface is completed using action painting techniques combined with overlays of written text. It is an ambitious project and demanding the utmost of his ability.

Three dimensional art project and debate

During second term the year seven students discussed an issue that was seen as relevant to their immediate world. This issue focused on whether or not bats should be allowed to exist in the Botanical Gardens.

Bats in the Botanical Gardens To secure an understanding of the issue students made small sculptures of bats and had a colorful and exciting debate. By the end of the debate the bats won their right to exist in the gardens with the help of some pretty determined fauna team members.

The making of the bats involved some delicate handiwork. From the school grounds students collected various size gum sticks which were then taped together, covered with material and painted. To put the bats into an art history context the students were introduced to three famous artists. Alexander Calder who popularized

the mobile, Stuart Davis who crossed cultural boundaries with his environmental installations and Lin Onus, the Koori artist, who with the use of parody and traditional aboriginal painting methods, focused on issues that concern us all.

Overall, the results of this enjoyable activity were very positive.

Year 7 Art Excursion

On Wednesday, 25 July two Year 7 classes bussed via the toll way to industrial Melbourne, where they spent their half-day art excursion visiting two sights considered beneficial to their semester art programme.

Year 7 at Cryovac CRYOVAC Sealed Air Corporation off Keilor Park Drive, Tullamarine introduced the students to the world of packaging where they were briefed about the realm of manufacturing and shown the factory floor and design studios. Donning head nets and earplugs they enthusiastically absorbed snippets of visual and verbal information that gave them an understanding of a world not normally encountered.

Essendon Airport, their other destination point, gave the students the opportunity to draw. Here they pulled out their visual diaries and with pencils sketched the aircraft scattered over the terminal.

Overall the adventure proved to be a well spent morning with good results.
