A fine tradition continues

The seventy-fifth year of rugby at Scotch saw many highlights, but sadly no premiership cup.

Even before the 2007 Rugby season began many opening warm-up games had been postponed, moved or in some cases cancelled due to the persistent drought that affected Victoria at the beginning of the year. Fortunately, due to the expertise of our grounds people and a little rain, we managed to play the competition fixture without too many problems.

Scotch played it’s old rival St Kevin’s first off, losing by a narrow margin to a very strong side that were soon placed as favourites for the Premiership. As the season progressed there was a shift in the axis of the rest of the opposition, as old powers Xavier and Geelong Grammar struggled and a resurgent Melbourne Grammar and Melbourne High threatened the top order.

In the mid-season break Mr Bayliss and Mr Bruce Norton took the team to New Zealand to experience a very challenging rugby environment in preparation for the final rounds of the competition. Mr Bayliss commented on how the tour really opened the boys’ eyes to some of the limitations in their game and produced a massive improvement in their skills and organisation around the field.

Scotch continued in a strong fashion after the tour and worked well to secure a berth in the finals up against St Kevin’s yet again. However, sadly for us, St Kevin’s proved too strong this year. Scotch had chances to win the game, but they couldn’t quite make the most of the lion’s share of the possession to clinch the winning try. Fortunately many of our players have another season, in some cases two seasons, at Scotch, so we are well placed for next year.

Under 13s vs Melbourne Grammar

The season ends with a celebration of the 75 years of rugby played between Scotch and Melbourne Grammar with a game hosted on the Scotch Main Oval. What a delight to see rugby posts framing the Littlejohn Chapel!

1st XV Rugby Team;

I would like to thank the Scrum Club for all their hard work throughout the season and without whose sterling help my first season as teacher in charge of rugby would have been completely overwhelming. GS
