Koomerang lodge renovations completed for the new season

WORDS: MR ROD McNAB (’67)

First snow for 2009 at Koomerang’s Mt Buller lodge

Koomerang Ski Club has recently completed significant upgrades at its Buller and Hotham lodges in time for what is hoped will be another bumper season.

Koomerang is one of Australia’s preeminent snowsports clubs, with lodges on four different mountains: Mt Buller, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Thredbo. Membership is open to all Old Boys and their direct relatives.

The Mt Buller lodge is the largest, with a sleeping capacity of 42 people. The main kitchen has been completed and the upstairs kitchen has been completely refitted. A brand new bathroom and laundry have been installed downstairs, and living quarters for a full-time manager, including ensuite, have been completed.

Koomerang has a small lodge at Mt Hotham with accommodation for eight people. It was also renovated, with a greatly–needed paint job, a bathroom renovation, and an upgrade to the appliances in the kitchen.

The club has two adjacent flats at Falls Creek providing accommodation for 16 people. Ongoing maintenance ensures the lodge is in good condition for the upcoming season.

Koomerang undertook extensive renovations of the Thredbo lodge in 2005. The original 1965 building shell was retained, but the interior was modernised. The lodge now accommodates 16 people in large bedrooms with contemporary bathrooms and spacious living and dining room areas. A feature is floor-to-ceiling windows in the main living areas which provide a great view back across the village to the snowfields.

Koomerang dates back to 1957, when a group of Old Boys voluntarily constructed a basic building at Buller with working parties each summer weekend. From humble beginnings, the club quickly expanded to establish a presence on four of Australia’s main snowfields.

With accommodation available all year round, whether or not you are a snowboarder or a skier, why not consider taking advantage of these fabulous facilities? For further information contact the Koomerang membership secretary Rod McNab on duoscript@bigpond.net.au. Why limit yourself to just one ski field when you can have access to four? GS
