Great setting, great friendship – the 2009 EMG Winter Lunch

Old Boys aged 75 and over returned to Scotch with their guests for a hearty meal in a convivial setting.

WORDS: MRS ASTRIDA COOPER – ACTING DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Marcus Manders (’37) & Keith Weymouth (’44)

Thelma & Noel Tyers (’39)

The beautiful gum trees on the banks of the Yarra River once again provided the perfect backdrop for the annual East Melbourne Glen Winter Lunch in June. As chairman of the chapter, Dr Hugh Melville (’42) welcomed the Principal Mr Tom Batty and Mrs Batty, Vice–Principal Ian Savage, and 150 Old Boys and their guests to the event, and particularly thanked those who had travelled long distances.

Following a hearty main course, Acting Director of Development, Mrs Astrida Cooper introduced Scotch College Curator Michael Smith, who addressed the gathering about the planning and maintenance of the 27 hectares of landscaped gardens and immaculate sporting fields at the School. Mick has been at Scotch for almost 16 years, with eight as curator, and directs a staff of 12.

The audience found his presentation fascinating, as it provided an insight into the ‘on ground and hands on’ work required to maintain the high standards and pristine appearance of our campus. A Powerpoint presentation showed the construction of a 2.4 megalitre water tank under the McKendrick Oval, the tank holding more than two and a half times the volume of an Olympic swimming pool. The group was particularly interested in the program in place to manage and care for more than 700 trees at Scotch.

The three EMG functions held each year provide Old Boys and their guests with an opportunity to renew old friendships and strengthen ties to their old school. Sue Faulkhead and the EMG committee are to be thanked for providing quality events where guests are warmly welcomed. The next EMG function will be the Christmas lunch, scheduled for Friday 11 December 2009 in the Boarders’ Dining Room. GS
