Educating outdoors for healthy relationships

WORDS: MS LAURA ELDRIDGE – JUNIOR SCHOOL PE TEACHER

Outdoor education is the use of experiences in the outdoors for the education and development of the whole person.

Outdoor education takes place in all years of the Junior School, with the boys progressing from a Prep breakfast to a full week away on camp in Year 6.

Jonny Cameron and Harry Stubbings (Both Yr 5)

The Outdoor Education Programme is extremely important for the boys’ social growth and developing their independence. They develop resilience, and expand their teamwork and cooperative skills in a variety of different settings.

The Outdoor Education Programme encourages them to tackle tasks with which they may never have been challenged with outside the school environment, helping to build their confidence and self-esteem.

Building relationships is a key component of the programme, and whether it is student to student, student to teacher or teacher to teacher, these bonds are unique.

Only through an outdoor education programme that these relationships can be made and widened. GS
