A creditable third in da Vinci Decathlon

WORDS: MS MICHELL LINOSSIER - ACADEMIC EXTENSION CO-ORDINATOR

A Scotch team won third place in the state final of the da Vinci Decathlon, an extension activity for Year 7s. It covers 10 disciplines ranging from Engineering and Art and Poetry to Mathematics and Forensics Science.

Back row: Alec Barber, Jack Bateman (Captain), Yao Dong Lin.
Front row: Alex Church, Santhush Gunawardene, Daniel Digby and Daniel Tao. Absent –  Alex Xia

At Scotch we use this opportunity to bring Year 7 students together to have fun, create new friendships and provide challenges via a lunchtime activity twice a week in Term 2. Towards the end

of the term, teams are selected from the group via a mini da Vinci to represent Scotch at the regional day.

In 2011 our teams came first and third respectively, which was a terrific result for all boys, with the winners qualifying for the state final. This is the third year that Scotch has made it through to this level and our team was awarded third place and a bronze medal.

The new friendships built through this activity are often sustained throughout a boy’s school life, and the skills developed with regard to teamwork, leadership and challenging oneself make every student who participates a winner. GS
