Cordner - Eggleston Cup: yet another exciting year

In 2011 the 1858 Club has continued its strong support of Australian Football at Scotch.

WORDS: MR ANDREW MACMILLAN ('79) - PRESIDENT, 1858 CLUB

Ned Walmsley kicks an early goal for Scotch

On Friday 6 May, Scotch College scored a great victory over Melbourne Grammar to win back the Cordner-Eggleston Cup on the Scotch Main Oval in front of 3,000 students, parents, supporters and Old Boys.

After an arm wrestle in the first half, Scotch went into the main break 11 points down; however, a brilliant eight goals to one in the third quarter saw Scotch open up a five-goal lead at three-quarter time. The atmosphere around the ground in the last quarter was terrific as the Grammar boys piled on the pressure, but Scotch stood firm and eventually ran out 12 point winners, 11-6-72 to 9-6-60.

The 1858 Club congratulates all the coaching staff and the players on a terrific, hard-fought victory which sees the Cordner-Eggleston Cup return to Morrison Street for the next 12 months.

The 1858 Club derives its name from the first recorded game of Australian Football which was played between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar School at Yarra Park on 7 August 1858. The two schools compete annually for the Cordner-Eggleston Cup, and this Scotch-Melbourne Grammar rivalry is the oldest continuing sporting contest in Australia. It has an important place in the history and culture of the two schools.

The 1858 Club was formed to support the Australian Football programme at Scotch. This support is provided in several ways, including:

  • coordinating the pre-season footy camp and the Year 7 jumper number presentation;
  • providing funding towards football development programmes and purchasing facilities and equipment;
  • arranging for parents to help with duties on game day (for example, as boundary umpires, goal umpires and scoreboard attendants); and
  • making a contribution towards providing specialist coaching at all year group levels.

In 2011, the 1858 Club has welcomed the Old Scotch Football Club as our major sponsor. The OSFC’s commitment to the school’s football programme includes arranging for more than 20 current OSFC players to be involved with school teams in either a coaching or assistant coaching capacity in 2011.

The 2011 year has been another exciting one for the 1858 Club, with activities including our mid-season social function in the Cardinal Pavilion on Friday 27 May and another successful annual ‘Breakfast at the G’ on Thursday 23 June.
