Stuart Sim – a world champion

Words: Mr Tom Woodruff - Director of Rowing

Stuart Sim (Year 12), cox of the 1st VIII in Scotch’s two most recent Head of the River triumphs, won the gold medal in the coxed IV at the recent junior world championships.

Held in early August, the championships were a test regatta for the 2012 Olympic rowing event to be held at Eton in the UK.

To be a world champion in anything is a great achievement, and the rowing community at Scotch College and across Australia was thrilled to see the crew win.

A rower may compete in a junior rowing event until 31 December of the year in which he or she reaches the age of 18. A field of nine crews raced in two heats, with first and second to go directly to the A final.

Although the Australian crew came second to Italy in its heat, it led through all key parts of the race, and seemed to have things under control despite Italy passing it at the finish. In the final, the crew moved immediately to a decisive two second lead at the 500m, and was an incredible five seconds (around two lengths) in front at the 1500m, before finishing two seconds in front of New Zealand, with Italy third.

Australia’s junior coxed IV crew is Alexander Hill (194cm/92kg) from the Adelaide Rowing Club, Phillip Adams (194cm/100kg) from Sydney Grammar School/Sydney Rowing Club, Aaron Wright (201cm/97kg) from Scots College/Mosman Rowing Club, NSW, Louis Snelson (197cm/94kg) from The Shore School/Sydney Rowing Club, and Stuart Sim – cox.
