Can you help?

Volunteer?

The school archives acquire and maintain our records, collections, life stories, and memorabilia. Volunteers are welcome, and as there is a great variety of work to be done, we feel sure we can find a task you will enjoy. For example, Ian Kerr (‘61) writes to Old Boys, staff and former staff asking them about themselves. Similarly, he writes to the families of deceased Old Boys and staff. He asks for life stories and for a few characteristic photos – boy and man – and also checks the accuracy of the basic data we already have (dates, places, names of parents and wives).

Many letters have to be carefully crafted and tactfully worded. He also does a double-check through each year’s deaths to make sure we have written to all the families for whom we have addresses.

Other letters Ian writes seek information (for example, asking Old Boys if they recall a particular event, topic, or person that we need to know about). Also, he writes to people who might be Old Boys we have lost touch with. Altogether he has written over 2,000 letters, and they have elicited a treasure trove of responses.

To become a volunteer, or to talk about it, please ring the Archivist, Dr Jim Mitchell, on 9810 4293.
