Great tour, but not great weather

WORDS AND Photography: MR TIM SHEARER

Despite persistently inclement weather, the 2012 Scotch College UK cricket tour was an outstanding success. Fifteen Years 9 and 10 students represented their School proudly, both on and off the field.

Coming up against talented and older teams in their season was a challenge, but a challenge the development squad relished. A loss to Uppingham School was followed by a determined draw against Eton, where we retained the Batty Shield.

Consecutive losses to Sedbergh School, Worksop College, Abingdon School and Bedford School were followed by a dramatic last-ball win against King Edward’s School in Birmingham. There we were fortunate to meet up with Year 9 students Sam Dawborn, Tom Edney, Riley Tilbrook and James Wiseman who were participating in the King Edward’s School cricket exchange programme. Sadly these boys only managed to play two or three games in their time there due to the rain.

Another win for the touring party against Altrincham Grammar School was followed by a solid performance in a rain-affected match against the Singapore Cricket Club on the way home. Among many highlights, the boys will fondly remember meeting the Australian cricket team in Durham.
