Motivation and Fun

Words: Mrs Amy ROGERS – JUNIOR SCHOOL STAFF

Fergus Ross and Zak Barry

It is a very exciting time for the Junior Primary levels, as iPads are becoming an important part of group work in their area of the School.

As the Prep year progresses and the boys’ fine motor skills become more proficient, the iPads are built into their program. The Year 1 and 2 boys enjoy the use of a bank of iPads for each level, complementing the laptops and interactive whiteboards which are permanent fixtures in the classroom.

Teachers are using the iPads for many different lessons to target specific skills. Spelling is an extremely useful application of the iPads, especially when teaching the boys phonic sounds and blends. With a large selection of spelling apps, the use of an additional interactive learning tool such as this can give students a truly well-rounded experience to enhance their spelling skills.

Mathematics is another area where iPads have become invaluable. They are used in small group situations to teach specific objectives such as telling the time, place value, addition, subtraction and shape.

The use of iPads in small groups is a fun way to motivate boys, and another tool to promote interactive learning within a structured lesson. The beauty of many of the apps available is that they can be directed to the ability level of the specific group using them.
