OSCA centenary launched with flair

OSCA began its centenary celebrations with a book launch and 'Men of Influence, Men of Weight' announcement.

Words: Mr David Ashton

OSCA President Mr Bruce Brown ('60)

The sense of anticipation was palpable in the Geoffrey McComas Theatre on Thursday 14 March as the time drew near for the announcement of the 100 'Men of Influence, Men of Weight'.

A sub-committee had worked many long hours to come up with the top 100 Old Boys of all time, and now the results of their labours were to become public.

Along with the announcement, the event was also the official start of the OSCA centenary celebrations, and included the launch of the OSCA centenary history, With a Keen but Loving Eye, authored by OSCA President Bruce Brown ('60).

As guests assembled in the theatre, there was a real buzz. Master of ceremonies Peter Findlay introduced the OSCA centenary DVD, an excellent audio-visual portrayal of the links between Scotch and OSCA. After Peter Findlay's formal welcome, the Principal Mr Tom Batty officially launched With a Keen but Loving Eye, and author Bruce Brown responded.

Selection sub-committee chairman Michael Robinson ('55) set the scene for the announcement of the top 100 Old Boys, describing the criteria the sub-committee used to hone the list to the final 100 – no easy task. Then School Captain Nick Bernardo and Vice-Captain Teddy Hookey read out the names and brief biographies with appropriate theatricality. Peter Findlay closed the first part of the evening by acknowledging the 'Men of Influence, Men of Weight' who were present at the event.

With the book and the centenary well and truly launched, guests adjourned to the David Yu Foyer for refreshments and canapes, spiced, no doubt, with plenty of discussion about the top 100 men.

Copies of the centenary history can now be purchased online at OSCAshop at www.oscanet.com.au; or you can call OSCA on 9810 4300 to order a copy. The cost is $50.
