In 2014, after more than 10 years’ planning, Koomerang Ski Club began construction of the club’s all-new lodge at Mt Hotham. This is a significant development for one of Australia's most successful ski clubs.
Months of discussion preceded a members’ vote last year to proceed with the complete redevelopment of Koomerang at Hotham. Now under construction, the new lodge will offer a standard of club accommodation equal to any contemporary commercial guest lodge.
Why Hotham? Simply that it’s the best snow area in Victoria. It has the highest altitude, the best snow cover (averaging three metres), the longest downhill runs, and excellent lift facilities for all standards of skiers and boarders from beginners to experts. Koomerang’s former Hotham lodge did not have the standard of snowfield accommodation required today; it was far too small and could not accommodate two families at any one time.
Considerable time was spent studying requirements, which included solving legal regulations to build in a national park, and meeting town planning and fire regulation requirements. Discussions took place with architects and the resort board of management. Eventually Koomerang received approval to build, and plans are for the lodge to be ready for the opening of the ski season in June.
Bookings have now opened. The new lodge, comfortably furnished, will provide accommodation for 16 people in twin or double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. There will be plenty of living and dining space on two levels, a large kitchen with two working areas, and the windows will provide panoramic views across the valleys and surrounding mountains.
Scotch Family members are encouraged to apply for Koomerang membership, with entry eligibility brought up to date to include not just students and Old Boys and their families, but also the parents of Old Boys.
Koomerang will hold a celebration high tea in the Cardinal Club at Scotch on Sunday 24 May 2015 to mark the opening of the new Hotham lodge. Scotch Family members are warmly invited to join club members in toasting the new facilities. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to attend this event, or to enquire about membership.
