Class of 2016

2016 VCE and ATAR Results

Congratulations to the class of 2016 for an outstanding set of VCE and ATAR results.

  • Andrew Kawai, Warren Lee, Michel Nehme and William Song scored the maximum possible ATAR of 99.95, and are, therefore, the duces of Scotch College for 2016
  • 12 boys (4.7% of the cohort) obtained an ATAR of 99.90 or more (top 0.1% in the population)
  • 19 boys (7.5% of the cohort) obtained an ATAR of 99.50 or more (top 0.5% in the population)
  • 28 boys (11.1% of the cohort) obtained an ATAR of 99.00 or more (top 1% in the population)
  • 43 boys (17.0% of the cohort) obtained an ATAR of 98 or more (top 2% in the population)
  • 81 boys (32.0% of the cohort) obtained an ATAR of 95 or more (top 5% in the population)
  • 124 boys (49.0% of the cohort) obtained an ATAR of 90 or more (top 10% in the population)
  • 186 boys (73.5% of the cohort) obtained an ATAR of 80 or more (top 20% in the population)
  • The median ATAR was 89.85 (127 of the 253 boys scored 89.85 or better)
  • Measures of ‘value add’, comparing ability testing data from earlier years and ATAR scores, indicate a very strong performance from this cohort

(Note: the population referred to in the ATAR statistics above is the population of the State-wide Year 7 cohort from 2011, including those students who moved or left school before Year 12.)

  • There were 24 ‘perfect’ scores of 50 across 12 subjects.
  • 16 Year 12 boys obtained scores of 50: Robert Azzopardi (Mathematical Methods), Thomas Baker (Physics), Alexander Barber (Chemistry and Physics), Javier Cross (Ancient History), Hrishikesh Goradia (English), Patrick Hinh (Mathematical Methods), Ciaran Ho (Further Mathematics), Andrew Kawai (English Language and Physics), Warren Lee (English, Literature and Specialist Mathematics), Liam McLellan (English), Michele Nehme (Literature), Connor O’Brien (Literature), Marcus Peters (Drama), Daniel Tao (English), Luca Varlamos (Legal Studies) and Samuel Zagame (English).
  • Four Year 11 boys obtained scores of 50: Letian Jiang (Mathematical Methods), Zi Feng Lan (Music Performance), Jerry Luo (Mathematical Methods), and Gehan Premaratne (Mathematical Methods).

From securing a VCE to achieving the maximum ATAR, these are impressive results.

Whilst fine marks open the immediate doors of post school life, it is that which lies behind them that determines, for each young man of the Class of 2016, the manner, direction and degree of his advancement once across the threshold. These attributes are far harder to measure than responses to a test on a particular day against a predetermined rubric – and, of course, the correlation between the two is not always strong.

Such characteristics mature slowly and can only be observed by those sharing sustained engagement across time and landscape.

Whether enriching classrooms along Morrison Street or those of an African Village; hiking through the night with an old friend or splashing about in a Tiwi College water hole with a new one; entertaining a reflective concert audience or those in good cheer around a boundary, those of the Class of 2016 have demonstrated the purpose, enterprise and empathy that will define their generation.

In so doing, they have equipped themselves with the capacity to take control of their own lives and to give back more than they take out.

That they are so armed is testament to the care and commitment of many, and congratulations go to all involved: boys, members of staff and parents.

To the Class of 2016, it has been a privilege to observe your ever tightening bonds, and the ease with which you have welcomed and celebrated difference and diversity. Through conversation and action you have been in the thick of things throughout the School and been outstanding role models. Your flair and good grace have provided confidence that our small investment in your future will reap rich rewards. Best wishes for all to come, and when the time is right, come back and share your stories: we want to know where your talents and imaginations have taken you, and what you have made of it all.
