Remembrance Day 2019

At the annual Remembrance Day assembly we welcomed a group of our Old Scotch War Veterans and their wives or partners who shared in the service along with members of the School Council. The special guest, who read the "Ode to the Fallen" was Mr Jim Murrell from the Class of 1963. Jim was a National Serviceman who served in Vietnam from 21 May – 29 October 1968 in the Royal Australian Infantry Corps and was evacuated when wounded. For the remainder of his service, he accompanied a chaplain to visit families and deliver messages of relatives who had been killed – previously families had received a telegram.

The Memorial Hall was built, dedicated and named as a memorial for those 221 former students and 5 staff members who did not return from World War 1 – these names are recorded on the Roll of Honour on the eastern wall above the stage. World War 2 would see another 376 Old Boys pay the ultimate sacrifice. Their names are recorded on the western wall beneath the balcony.

While the assembly was in progress small wooden markers, each bearing the name of one of the Old Scotch Collegians who died serving this country in war, was placed in the lawns of the Quadrangle by Year 7 students.
