Cyril Lindsay Everade Vere Eustace REID

REID

Cyril Reid was born on 10 May 1889 at Deniliquin. His parents were Donald and Agnes M. Reid. He attended Scotch in 1906. He was in Cadets.

Cyril was an electrician when he enlisted on 8 September 1914 at Broadmeadows, Victoria. He served in the 7th Battalion with the rank of Private. His Regimental Number was 989.

Cyril died on 25 April 1915 at Gallipoli. He was 25 years of age.

Service record

Lindsay or ‘Lin’ Reid was one of 11 brothers and sisters brought up in rural Victoria. He was the only one of the five boys in the family to attend Scotch College, which he did for just one year, 1906.

He was killed at the landing on 25 April. His older brother Mordaunt (Mort) Reid was an officer with the 11th Battalion. Like ‘Lin’ he was killed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Lindsay was buried at Lone Pine, but Mordaunt’s body was never found.

In June 1915 their mother (a widow) wrote a poignant letter to the Department of Defence inquiring about a pension (see below).

Cyril Reid is buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
