I am delighted to introduce this new, weekly e-newsletter for Prep to Year 12 parents and carers. Going forward, The Torch will be sent every Thursday afternoon, and contains important announcements, events and opportunities to get involved.
Consolidating all communications from the school into one newsletter will hopefully not only declutter your inbox, but keep you better informed and connected with your son’s activities and the vast array of opportunities available to him.
The Torch is structured as a mobile-friendly microsite. Simply click through via any of the links in the email, then use the main menu (located top right of screen on mobile devices and left of screen on PCs) to read Junior and Senior School notices, sports and co-curricular announcements, and health and wellbeing articles. Upcoming parent, clubs and auxiliary events, and music and drama performances, are also listed in the Upcoming Events section.
As we endeavour to operate more cohesively as ‘one school’, this new version of The Torch brings together Primary Matters in the Junior School and the old Senior School publication of the same name. Over the coming year, we will continue to bring further enhancements to the way we communicate at Scotch, with key platforms such as our parent portal and website also being redeveloped.
I hope you will find The Torch useful and informative. Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
Dr Scott Marsh
Principal
Please note the following Term 2 dates:
Welcome to the Junior School section of The Torch. It is great to connect with you on this new platform. We look forward to exploring how this new approach can further enrich our communication and connection with the community.
As mentioned last week, there may be a few bumps in the road, but we will keep moving forwards. If you do have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school for support.
As Socrates is believed to have suggested, ‘the secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new’.
Thank you for your support as we build something new.
On Tuesday the boys gathered to recognise ANZAC Day through a Junior School ANZAC service. A number of boys from our Year 6 cohort put together the service and led the school in acts of remembrance. As has been the case for the past two years, the service culminated in the entire Junior School gathering on the oval to observe the last post and a minute’s silence.
Reverence is one of the school’s values and our Junior School boys represented this value with great aplomb. I thank the Year 6 boys and Mr Daffy for their hard work.
Lastly, congratulations to 3S for their work this week connecting with a group of Year 12 boys. A request came from the English department to support a group of Year 12 boys working on a specific SAC for their VCE this year. The SAC was aimed at exploring the idea of play and childhood and the request was for the Year 12s to come and work with Junior School boys to connect to childhood in 2024. 3S welcomed the Year 12 boys into their classroom to connect and engaged in interesting and insightful conversations.
The visit has inspired a new piece of work for 3S. It is wonderful to see these relationships develop as we seek to reinforce our ‘one school’ model.

Next Tuesday 30 April, our Strings Department will host an information session for Prep and Year 1 parents and boys in the Junior School Assembly Hall from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.
In this session, we will share more about the wonderful world of Scotch String instruments, and demonstrate the violin, viola, cello and double bass, highlighting all the opportunities available to boys once they begin learning.
Parents can also learn about the two learning pathways Scotch now offers (Traditional and Suzuki) and explain the pros and cons of each method and how it may suit your family.
For further information, please email Amberley Bremner at amberley.bremner@scotch.vic.edu.au, Head of Junior School Strings or call 9810 4487.

It is not too late to submit tuition forms for your son to begin learning an instrument at Scotch. Please complete the Music Tuition Form here.
Please note, if your son is in Lower Primary and you wish to accompany him to his Suzuki lessons, you must submit a current Working with Children Card to your son’s music teacher or Emma Macrae, Head of Junior School Music. A green lanyard must also be collected from the Junior School Office on arrival and worn while on campus.
Music Events Calendar 2024
There are many wonderful performance opportunities throughout the year for all boys in the Junior School with numerous concerts, instrumental recitals and performances coming up.

House Cross Country
It has been a wonderful week for the boys to be outside on the beautiful ovals of the Scotch campus. They are working hard to run their personal best times with the goal to compete only against themselves and beat their best time.
Any boy who beats his best time receives House points that count towards the weekly House winner and the overall Cock House Cup Champion presented at Speech Night.
Prep to Year 2 boys run approximately 1.1 km around the looped course at the Senior School Ovals. Years 3 and 4 run 2 km and Years 5 and 6 run 3km at the House Cross Country event.
PE homework for all boys over the coming weeks is to prepare for the event. Prep to Year 2 boys should be able to run 6 to 8 minutes without stopping, Years 3 and 4 should be able to run 12 to 15 minutes without stopping, and Years 5 and 6 should be able to run at least 15 to 20 minutes.
A timetable and further information about the House Cross Country event on Monday 13 May will be shared shortly.
House Football
With Winter sports upon us, Years 3 to 6 boys are preparing for House Footy this term. Boys in Prep to Year 2 are also beginning their footy skills development.
Term 2 APS Sport (Years 5 & 6)
The first APS competition starts next week on Wednesday 1 May. Thank you to parents for supporting the boys in their preparation. Early mornings, after school hours and games on Wednesdays contribute to a full week for the boys.
If your son is disappointed in his team selection for footy or volleyball, please encourage him to talk with his coach and teachers to explain why this may be the case. Good questions to ask include, “What can I do to improve my game?” or “What are my strengths and what are my weaknesses?”
Athletes with a growth mindset are open to feedback and change. As we remind the boys, it’s not where you start that matters, it’s where you finish that counts!
Term 2 APS Sports Uniforms
The uniform for Term 2 APS sport is as follows:
Parents and families are welcome to come and watch the Wednesday APS Sport competition. Please enter the grounds via the Monash Gates (Gate 8) on Glenferrie Road.

Training times are as follows:
Cordner-Eggleston Cup
The Cordner-Eggleston Cup is a traditional football game played between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar School (MGS). It began on 7 August 1858 and is thought to be a pivotal influence on the beginnings of the AFL as we now know it. The first match is commemorated by a bronze statue depicting the game outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
This year it will be held on Friday 24 May and will see the commencement of a new tradition involving the respective Junior Schools of both Scotch and MGS play a curtain raiser prior to the main game between the first XVIII’s.
A combined team of Year 5 and 6 boys will be selected in the coming weeks to compete on the Scotch College Main Oval before the game. Game time and logistics will be shared shortly. Year 5 and 6 APS Football coaches will observe the boys and select the strongest team to play MGS. Boys will be notified of selection and Mr Daffy will coach the team.
Sports Schedules
Please keep an eye on your sons’ schedule and loading. For example, boys in Year 5 and 6 attending morning Running Club when they have PE or other sports later in the day. Scotch has a wide variety of opportunities for the boys, and they do tire considerably if they have before, during and after school physical commitments.
Sports Queries
Sporting queries should be directed to our new Junior School Sport email address juniorschoolsport@scotch.vic.edu.au These will be responded to by Ms Lucia Thompson, our Junior School Sports Administration Assistant.

Yogita Gupta
JSPA President 2024
It is wonderful to welcome you to our first edition of the revised Torch newsletter. I am excited to have the opportunity to communicate with parents regarding key events in the Senior School and issues of relevance to you and your boys.
Over the break, our students were skiing in Canada, enjoying wonderful conditions and great skiing opportunities. Thank you to the teachers who facilitated this experience for our avid skiers. Our Pipes and Drums participants enjoyed success at the National Championships in Maryborough, which augurs well for the international competition later in the year.
We have welcomed students back to a busy Term 2 in the senior school.
I have spent some time with our Year 9 students and teachers on the retreat in Healesville. Witnessing the sessions enabled me to understand the importance of these days away in nature, welcoming the Year 9 students to the House, cementing strong relationships between the boys and key staff members, and supporting students in their growth from child to man.
I was impressed by the engagement of the students in the range of activities and their capacity to be open in discussions about their identity, values, and actions. I look forward to witnessing their continued development as they move through the senior school.
In looking ahead, we have much to look forward to in the senior school in the coming weeks; several excursions and incursions, including the Year 10 Respectful Relationships Program and the House Public Speaking competition.
I am enjoying getting to know the students, staff and families of Scotch College and look forward to seeing you at sport, performances, or other activities throughout the term. My door is always open to boys and parents alike.

Each week in The Torch, our Psychology and Health teams will explore a topic related to boys’ health and wellbeing.
This week, we’re talking about ‘school refusal’ – an issue that sometimes arises during times of change, or at the beginning of a new school term.
School Refusal
School refusal, sometimes called school avoidance or school phobia, is not uncommon. It is different to ‘wagging’ or truancy and is often related to worry or anxiety-related issues about going to school.
School refusal may start gradually or happen suddenly. Although it is normal for a child to occasionally miss a day of school, parents should only be concerned if a child regularly complains about feeling sick or often asks to stay home due to minor physical complaints.
School refusal is a complex issue as there is rarely a single cause. It can affect young people of all ages, during both their Junior and Senior years. Dealing with a child refusing school can affect the whole family, adding pressure to an already challenging stage of life. School refusal is not considered a formal psychiatric diagnosis. It’s a name given to an emotional and/or behavioural problem.
For further information on ways to approach this issue and work towards a solution, further reading and video resources are available here.
As always, if you have any concerns about your son specifically, please contact the Psychology team for further information or seek medical or professional help.
